Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein Supplement Review
73
Whey protein is widely thought to be the best protein available. This could be largely due to the fact that it has such versatility. Regardless of your health and fitness goals whey protein can have a place in your diet. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey protein supplement has been designed to provide high quality protein to individuals regardless of whether they are trying to lose weight, build muscle mass or just to replenish lost nutrients during training.
This supplement review is user based so I will be basing it on my own experience of using it. Of course different people will have slightly different experiences than me. This supplement also has several different flavors of which I have only tried two of them. This review is based on the vanilla and chocolate flavor. Regardless of that I hope the review will help you to decide whether or not this is a suitable supplement for you.
Price
Okay so I will start with one of the most important factors and that is price. Optimum Nutrition market this supplement as “gold standard” whey. By that title we can assume that it is of a higher quality than most supplements in this category. I think that is reflected in the price. You can expect to pay around £50 for a 5lb tub or around £80 for a 10lb tub, although you are likely to save over £10 if you buy it from places such as Amazon.
Value For Money
Value for money covers a lot of things but mainly includes things like how many shakes you will get per tub and the type of ingredients used. Well with regards to the type ingredients used this gold standard whey from Optimum Nutrition is certainly ahead of the pack. It is made from the purest form of protein available and is processed to make sure that as much nutrition as possible is retained.
If you use the supplement as recommended you will be able to get around 77 servings from the 5lb tub so not bad value here either. Each serving provides 24g of protein so I tended to double the amount of scoops in each of my shakes to increase my protein intake. 24g is more than suitable for general usage though.
Nutrition
This supplement is perfectly situated in the middle of the scale. By that I mean it can be used for weight gain and weight loss. As mentioned earlier there is 24g of the best quality protein per serving. Each serving, as suggested, will provide you with 120 calories, 3g carbohydrates and 1g fat.
This protein is easily absorbed by the body and is perfect for drinking directly after a workout and first thing in the morning. I used it as an addition to my bulking diet and blended one or two shakes with other ingredients such as bananas, almonds and oatmeal.
Taste and Mixing
I tried the chocolate and the vanilla flavours and I have to say that they were among the best I have ever tasted. Optimum Nutrition has put a lot of thought into the taste of these supplements and it is likely that I will be back to sample some of the other available flavours soon. Currently there are seven flavours available, chocolate, vanilla, choc/mint, cookies, rocky road, strawberry and tropical punch.
Mixing is pretty easy, the powder pretty much dissolves in the shaker and it doesn’t take much effort to fully mix it with the water. This supplement has actually been designed to enable mixing with a spoon. One issue I had with mixing it in a shaker though was the layer of froth that developed at the top. This took a little while to go down but was a minor issue in the grand scheme of things.
Overall
Overall I would have to say that here Optimum Nutrition has produced a great supplement. For a protein supplement of this quality it is very competitive on the price front. It is a very versatile supplement which can be considered for a wide variety of fitness and nutritional goals.
I will consider using this again for my maintenance or fat loss diets because I feel that that there are better products out there such as Met-Rx Size Up which are far more suited to the bulking up diet. That said, taste wise and value for money this supplement will be hard to beat.
